Born to be Outdoors . . .

Rumour has it that Bob Shafto's parents found him as a baby, high up in the alpine, his little body swinging gently from a rope, firmly attached to the rock with an anchor. O.K., you know we're just joking, but we truly can't imagine him anywhere else but outdoors. Yes, he does office work when he has to, and yes, he occasionally attends a music concert or a play. But Bob is in his element, hands-down, when there is fresh air to breathe, a view that stretches forever, a gorgeous day, and a mountain in front of him just asking to be taken on, whether it involves mountaineering, rock climbing, backpacking, or just enjoying a tasty picnic at the top.

Bob was born into a large family, the youngest of six children, with parents who nurtured that budding sense of adventure and the love of nature they saw in their offspring. Leading the family on hiking trips in the summer and skiing trips in the winter firmly planted the outdoor seed in Bob. Living in both Calgary and Banff and exploring the surrounding mountains, many of their friends and acquaintances were mountain guides and park wardens. Early exposure to this line of work further encouraged Bob in thinking that outside was where he belonged. Unfortunately, school often got in his way when it came to finding skiing and climbing time! His education included some international schooling, which luckily provided him with opportunities for ski trips to places like Austria.

On Bob's return to Canada, he attended university for a while, but the call to be outside doing what he loved was too strong, and he decided to pursue a career in outdoor adventuring. He has been based in Revelstoke since 1989, after falling in love with the area and all that it had to offer. In 1994, Snotech Services Inc. was created. After five successful years, Bob decided to Born to be Outdoorsbranch out into Heli Canada Adventures, providing the public with the same kind of outdoor adventures that he grew up loving. Just recently, it was decided that the summer and winter activities provided by Heli Canada Adventures should be separate and now there is Revelstoke Ski Touring as well.

Bob continues to live with his family, Deb and Matt, in Revelstoke along with his faithful dog Big Eddy, who has been on countless outdoor expeditions with Bob and the team. Bob's son Matt often works alongside his dad. In Bob's spare time, he likes to . . . well, we think you already know the answer to that!

A Passion for Guiding

A passion for guidingThe guides that Bob works with have many things in common with the boss. They've all been involved in outdoor pursuits for many years, ranging from ski patrollers to climbing experts to avalanche technicians. The gradual progression into guiding felt like a natural one for a group who all loved being outdoors and were passionate in their desire to pass that enthusiasm on to others. They are all ACMG certified as well as being professional members of the Canadian Avalanche Association. The team has many combined years of experience guiding various groups locally, provincially, and internationally. They are all well-versed in local geology, local history, and the environment and love to share this knowledge with their guests.

A passion for guidingThis is a group of people who are colleagues but also friends. Mutual trust is of invaluable importance in this line of work, and confidence in each other is well established within the team. And last but certainly not least, this crew thrives on providing their guests with a first-rate outdoor adventure – they enjoy watching you enjoy. A happy client makes a happy guide. Pure and simple...
